Currently Coveting

There have been a few things on my wish list this Spring, and in my hunts through the thrift shops and Winners, I have been keeping my eye out.  Lately I have been picking up an awful lot of black things, not all of which will be worn in warmer weather though some can.  Given my propensity for buying either blue, black or purple, I think I should be renamed The Bruise.  I had some fantastic finds at the thrift shop this weekend though nearly everything was black -Quelle Surprise!  I also bought a red dress, made in Hong Kong, Chinese styled and with a dragon fly and lotus hand painted onto it.  It looks shapeless on the hanger but takes on my shape just fine when I wear it.  The joy and the frustration of thrift shopping is that there are finds like this, but rarely do I find the items actually on my wish list.

Wanted:  Culottes  cropped or long with a mid rise, a flat front and soft draping fabric, in styles similar to these (but I'm not crazy about the prints.  I want paisley of course).

Source: ASOS

Wanted:  Turkish tapestry inspired just about anything.

I saw these Just Cavalli jacket and pants in a magazine and could not take my eyes off the page.  I want these pants like I want air to breathe.

Wanted:  Fitted denim vest

I scour the thrift shops looking for something like this but no luck so far.

 Source: Etsy
And when I am outrageously wealthy I will have clothing made for me by Cavalli and Valentino.  Of course Valentino will very kindly make lower necklines for me.

Once on the wanted list but recently acquired:  wide legged or palazzo pants.  It's difficult to get some that are not too bulky around the waist and tummy, which are long enough in the rise and inseam and come in a pattern and colour combination I like.  I suppose I'm picky.  But I did find some I love and I wore them like this.

With a sweater in the morning because I was a bit cold.

And like this when I popped out to have a coffee with mum and dad.

  2. if you were here that wishes (minus denim vest - i do not want silicosis) would be easy to satisfy. and not that expensive like valentino. i would take some of your art as fee :-)
and you are not picky. you have style!!!
what we can see in your palazzo pants outfit. that are some very chic pants of that kind! and everyone can see how you own the color blue.......
one has to be patient when shopping 2.hand. i had in my mind a cute nordic folk costume cape for years, tried on a lot. to small, to big, to expensive, to rotten..... and then i forgot about completely. this month i found one - the perfect one. hubs had to point me at. it looked small but it fits. no moth holes. the cape found me i like to think.

    1. I will buy up old distressed jeans from the thrift shop and you can make a patch work vest out of them. LOL. Honestly I would be so thrilled with your sewing things for me I would pay you to take my paintings.
I have been shopping second hand for decades, I know it requires patience, but every once in awhile I get tired of waiting and scoop up something I want in retail. :-)
I'm glad your rnordic folk costume cape found you -or that hubs found it. Without moth holes is definitely a bonus!!

  3. The wide leg pants are great and I also am all about the tapestry elements! Congrats on crossing off one of you wish list items!

    1. I could surround myself in tapestry! I suppose that could get to be a bit much, but still it would take a lot of it for me to be overwhelmed.

  4. Those wide-legged trousers look cool and comfortable, Shawna; if you found those, maybe the thrifting gods will provide the rest of your wish list too! We live in hope...
The red dress looks great (can we see you in it, please?) and I can see why you have fallen for the Cavalli skinnies, so beautiful.
I think the whole thing about secondhand shopping is living with the unpredictability. We've all had items we'd love to find but never do - until the day it appears! And we've all had trips to charity/thrift shops in high hopes but come home with nothing. Perseverance, that's the name of the game! xxx

    1. I didn't make it clear enough that the wide legged pants were found retail. Discount retail of course, but not thrift. I do keep looking but couldn't pass these ones up when I saw them. I fear that the thrifting gods have heard word of my rabid atheism and might work against me. I shall persevere though!
I will make a post soon of my latest thrift shop scores and wear a few things. Right now I am too tired for getting dressed. LOL that sounds so pathetic.

  5. Wow that fashion photo is amazing. Her hair alone is cray cray! I think she must have 4 full nests in there. I expect a flock of seagulls to fly out at any minute. I can see why you love those pants though. What a stunning pattern and colours.

Can't wait to see the red Asian style dress on you.

    bisous

    1. Yes, about five bird families have moved into her hair and an environmental protection agency won't allow the poor model to move or to do her hair differently. A Flock of Seagulls were actually involved in the making of this hair. Each band member donated a bit of his own big blond locks.

Okay, enough silliness. Asian style dress coming later in the week!

  6. Love the Hong Kong dress and am dying to see you in it. Cavalli is one of the few modern labels I love - I love the rock and roll excessiveness if his styling and how bad ass he appears to be in interviews.
I'm sure I have some 1980s culottes in amongst my stock. If I find them they're yours.
Your casual outfit looks great, those trousers make your legs look so long and enviable. xxxx

    1. I am a sweet, kind, gentle, ladylike sort of person who secretly wants to be bad ass. Obviously I need to channel a bit of Cavalli. Figuring out what size I wear in 80's lingo and translating it into UK sizes sounds like a challenge! But it would be soooo cool if you found some culottes in your stock.
Thanks, and not sure how pants dragging on the ground can make legs look longer, but I do kinda know what you mean. Since I have a longer inseam than average I'm just really happy when I find trousers that long!

  7. I like the pants you found. You could join me in the Hamptons!
And the red dress is gorgeous.
Thrifting with wish lists is a very tricky business indeed. But it seems that just when we give up, there it is. Wait till next season when some of those Top Shop pants will be hitting thrift shops - they are similar to your coveted Cavalli pants. What I really want to see is you with that hairdo. Hahaha!

    1. I didn't make it clear in the post that the pants were found retail-Winners, not thrift. But the best part of thrifting is indeed the surprises and treasures. Top Shop items do not make their way to Comox. There is a lot of Reitmans and Walmart mixed in with Jones New York that probably comes from Winners. LOL Oh and some extra extra large polyester Salwar Kameezes.

I will need a wig for that hair. It's difficult to make a pixie do beehive!

  9. I have a pair of coulottes similar to the ones you want (in black)...if I thought they'd fit you length wise, I'd send them your way! I have short legs, though, so they'd probably be shorts on you!

    1. I could pretend they are gouchos. I remember when I was ten corduroy gouchos were the thing! I wanted some but mum thought they looked silly so I wasn't allowed. Still pouting.

  10. The dress is delicious! what a find! I can't wait to see you in it, it's going to be fabulous! Cavalli's excess is so appealing isn't it? culotte's are fab, I hope you get a pair as you would look amazing in them! I hope you get them - the charity shops are calling me at the moment (calling/screaming, I'm itching to go!) x x x

    1. Our thrift shops usually only carry stuff that is a year or two 'out of date'. I don't care much about that but if I wanted vintage I would definitely have trouble finding it.

  12. Oh wow, if I saw those pants from the magazine in a store I would have to throw away most of my savings account on them. They are heavenly!!!

I love culottes too. Maybe I'll learn to sew some up. I love them in fluid fabric.

  13. Waaaaah! Blogger ate my comment! And it didn't even tell me. I came back to see your comment and nothing! I've been erased! I'm diminishing! Becoming small! Almost invisible! Help!!! Of course I wrote suave elegant prose about your clothes, especially the red dress! Blah di blah di blah! Get it? I like the solid colour on the back of the pants. That's a bit different. Maybe they are reversible depending on the effect you want. Admire me arriving, whip to the loo, change around, now admire me leaving! Hope your weather is better than ours. Freezing rain with 80km winds, and it have to go and get the kids from school! Wah! :-) XO

    1. Blogger is acting up lately. I didn't think it was too bad but have discovered a bunch of posts I didn't see from several days ago and also many of my replies were magically vanished.

YIkes to that weather! We get that kind in our winter sometimes too. We are having summer, though summer here is not hot. Temps are high teens to low twenties and the sun competes with the grey clouds that like to roll in and dump a Scottish mizzle on us.

Oh the pants are actually just the same pattern front and back but the stripe at the side is wide so I guess it's giving the illusion of being like that all across the back. Must admit, my bum is flat enough to be mistaken for my front, so I probably could reverse pants. LOL

  14. Love your palazzo pants! They look terrific on you.
You know, I live in Nashville and the thrift stores are loaded with fitted denim vests of all colors and sizes. If you'll give me an idea of what you're specifically looking for along with your size I'll bet I can find one for you ;-)

    1. Thanks, Alicia. They are so comfortable I could definitely be convinced to get more!
With the vests, the pictures I used are pretty much what I am looking for, something like a man's waistcoat and a bit nipped in at the waist. I'm a tricky fit though since although it doesn't look it, my bust is a bit larger than the clothing makers expect it to be in comparison with the rest of me. So I would wear a medium but it may not do up over my chest, a large might fit fine or need tailoring. If you find something inexpensive that would be awesome, but I wouldn't want you to go to any trouble. It's very sweet of you to suggest it!

  15. When I saw culotte's on your wish list I remembered a whole lot that I used to have in my wardrobe ... some even made by me when doing a sewing course (no longer sew as I decided that I actually didn't enjoy it even though it was a full subject I did at school!).

I love those pants on you ... you look long and lean and gorgeous!!!
