Happier In Layers

Today I attempted to get dressed and it took me a few tries because I attempted to go minimal. There are some sorts of minimal which I like.  I pay minimal attention to my hair, for instance.  This is real bed-head.

I put on this little flowered dress you have seen before and added this drapey purple topper thing which I suspect reads a bit boho-granny.

I wasn't happy so I tried to spice things up a bit by doing the Highland Fling.  (Note to self:  do not take photos when you have dents in your knees from the carpet when you did your stretches.)

Then I tried the fashion model trick of using the purple topper as a turban.  Surely a turban could liven up this boring little floral dress.

Chic, non?  But alas, not me.  I am not chic.  Sophie is not chic.  We don't do chic around here.

Then I realised the problem.  Layers were lacking!  I need layers to feel like me.  Only when the temperatures soar to the mid eighties do I have to abandon layers.  That is if you don't count the layer of sweat that goes with any hot day outfit.  I added layers and felt quite smug.  THIS is me.  Here I am. There is just too much awesomeness here for only one dress.   Two dresses are needed for the job!

Faking it till I make it!

Shoes?  Oh yeah, later if I go out there will be shoes.  Going out is not so much on the agenda these days.  Resting and doodling Grunge/Goth Fairies is the daily routine.

I love doodling in my ideas book because I need the practice at not expecting perfection of myself. I love imperfection in many things but struggle to accept my own imperfections.

On with the journey!  The journey includes naps.

  2. Well of course! Your artist's eye loves they play of red and purple picking out the colours from the print. And FYI, you look great in every shot...even the turban. And that lovely purple drapey thing is definitely NOT granny Boho. I know her, and she would never wear this :-D XO JJ

    1. OH I would like to meet Granny Boho! Maybe she would like to borrow my purple drapey thing. Or perhaps try on my turban!

  5. Well then you should try one! I am certain you could pull off a purple turban! Or perhaps Master 16 would like to try it.

  6. Love seeing your doodles here! Share more with us!
I'm most comfy in layers too. In fact I have trouble putting together an outfit without adding on. But I am horrible in the heat.
I love your long purple hair dahling....it's so you!
make sure to remove it before your nap. You could strangle on that stuff!

    1. I will try to remember to share more of my doodles, the very much less than perfect stuff.

Our temps are going up next week, well into the eighties so I will probably have to forgo layers then. It will be quite a challenge and cause me to stand in my closet for some time feeling perplexed.

Purple hair-oh how I want it. I think that for now I will stick with my brown pixie but that when I go gray I will wear my hair long and purple.

  7. Shawna, you just made me realize something I'd never even thought about before! I love layers, too. Here is Texas, especially during the summers, it's too hot to do much layering, and I see now that's why I've never really liked summer clothes. However, today I did do a light gauze shirt over a sleeveless maxi dress and felt good in it and was okay temperature wise and felt "complete." So thanks for the insight.

    1. Hello there in Texas! I'm glad could help! I'm also glad that your takeaway from this post is about layers and not purple turbans, though perhaps your purple turban would be better than mine! I used to do that all the time, put gauzy blouses over a dress and wear it sort of like a lightweight jacket. My gauzy blouse supply has run out but I think I will take my own tip and hunt down a couple. Next week it is going to be too warm for me to wear two dresses!

    3. Hi Charlene! I had that problem too until I started my blog and it was rather annoying. I guess you will just have to start blogging! I will assume all anonymous people are you from now on-LOL.

  8. The turban one, rofl! :D I agree, the layering is totally you. You do layering like I do alcohol, with ease :D Aaah, can't wait to see the grunge fairies! ^_^

  9. Too hot for double dresses here at the moment! Even a single layer feels excessive, but has to be done to maintain a modicum of decency...And actually, I love the floral dress on its ownsome the best of all! xxx

    1. The last time I wore that floral dress I ended up layering it as well and many people, as well as you, said oh no you must wear that dress on it's own. Apparently I can't. You might have to stage an intervention.

  10. I enjoyed your poses. That was fun. I think you have a fantastic figure, Shawna. I love that simple floral dress. I purchased a dress recently that has the same cut. It's very low in the front. At first I wanted to layer to conceal the cleavage. But then I decided, what the heck, and went without. I felt free and a little sexy. Purple looks great on you.

  11. The new collection from the House of Shawna is divine! I'm very fond of a turban and both ways you have styled your dress/dresses - your goth fairies are fab! x x x

    1. Thanks, T. I think one of the reasons I can't wear that dress alone is because I feel weird in small florals so somehow I have to downplay it. I have just suddenly had that insight and thought I'd share it with you. Aren't you glad?

  13. Well, I didn't think the dress was boring - especially with the turban - but the layers do take it up a notch. Fantastic idea! Always listen to the faireis.

  14. yep! the layering with the red dress is best! but i think it´s not actually the layering what makes it better - its skirt length. flowery dress pure looks a bit like you´r wearing a child´s dress. proportion, proportion, proportion...
the red panel adds the right weight to the outfit. clever done!

can we await some fairy x-mas tree decs this year?

    1. For me it's the flowers. I mean, I don't really like wearing small floral patterns on their own and I think the small floral pattern contributes to it looking like a child's dress on me.

Well you never know! Goth Fairies do like trees.

  16. Fun post!! Such a cute floral dress - it's a great cut on you! I loved it with the red underskirt/dress! I also think it would be very cute with cropped leggings, perhaps white, perhaps with lace? :) And I love the turban - I wear my tops as turbans all the time on the beach! :))))) Chic? Oh yes, please!!

Sweat layers are just hysterical, Shawna! You've made my day!

    Hugses!

  17. While I know you love the layers here (and I definitely think they work!), I love this singular dress look. I would pair it with a short black boot (either combat or a suede/cowboy-type style) and then when it gets cooler (ha!) black leggings or tights… But seriously, you look great in the dress without the extra layers!!! I say give it a chance :)

    1. Too hot for boots and definitely too hot for leggings! LOL Thanks Alexis, I realise that wearing the dress just as it is with a great pair of shoes would be the normal way to wear it. I just don't seem to be very inclined towards normal. ;-)
