Getting My Head Round It

I am one of those people who save the good clothes for that special occasion which never rarely comes.  I'm trying to modify that by both keeping my wardrobe casual and by convincing myself I deserve to wear the 'good' things any day.  My definition of 'good' is often more about quality and price than the fanciness of the garment, and thus we get these black pants....

Yes, my hair is wet and yes, the wall is holding me up.  I am recovering from a horrible cold (are there any nice colds?) and this is the first in several days where I've showered and dressed and progressed towards the sunny living room.  In honour of feeling better I put on my 'good pants' which are basically 'good' because they are black, well made and cost more than fast fashion or thrift.  They also fit me well and are very comfortable.  Why should I not wear them every day give those credentials?  Since my lifestyle does not call for a little black dress, I somehow got it into my head that the substitute was black pants.  You know, for all of those casual but elegant parties I am always going to.  It's not a fear that I will be overdressed for a normal day by wearing these, it's the fear of wearing them out, of too soon rendering them not fit for one of those elegant parties and then what would I do if I received an invitation?

Sometimes I save a lot of money by being my own therapist.  Clearly I am thinking nonsense here and it's time for an attitude adjustment.  So today, a day of sitting on the sofa in the sunbeams, drinking tea and happy to be upright, I am wearing my 'good pants'.  And I am re-thinking their name.  They are good pants because they feel good and I look good.  Who doesn't want that on a daily basis?  I sure do.

  1. yes - live´s to short to wear clothes that are not good!
i have some "opera clothes" - very special stuff for the 2-3 events in the year i attend, then i have my chic "going to town" stuff and the house clothes - but this house clothes were once the chic stuff, still being high quality and perfekt fit and totally my personal style. just a bit to worn out for my taste of chic..... so even if i´m chopping wood or hauling coals or cleaning the house i wear something i feel good in - and this helps me to feel good in reverse - especially on mentally dreary days.
save some tea for me :-)

    1. I have plenty of tea. I shall make a pot for us. My life is so strange now, I do not do anything either very fancy or very mucky. Once I needed gardening clothes and camping and hiking clothes but no longer. I also no longer need career clothes nor any fancy party or opera-going clothes. Feeling good in your clothes certainly makes a difference, and I think it even lets you concentrate better which is always a good thing when chopping wood. xoxoxo

  2. Sitting in the sunbeams with you today my dear!
I love Beate's philosophy. Reminds me of the elegant aristocracy fallen on hard times wearing worn out cashmere to feed the chickens. Do aristocracy have chickens?
I myself wear silk regularly to sit at home.
I am ready for any sudden visit by the Queen!
Your black pants are lovely...but black? :-o

    1. Yeah, I know, black. I avoid it these days but a pair of black pants are useful and if I could have gotten them in navy, charcoal grey or dark brown I would have. Sometimes I just have to go with what's available and fit comes first. The idea was the pants version of an LBD, a bit dressier than jeans but still casual.
I would like some silk pyjamas for sitting at home in the sunbeams.
Beate's method is pretty much what my grandmother did. She only wore wool skirts and blouses. I am attracted to a touch of menswear though not quite as much as you are, so I am very comfortable in jeans when I get the right fit. Trousers are even more difficult to get a good fit so I rarely have those. xoxoxo

  3. My takeaway from blogland has included the revelations that one is not being "silly" or "self-absorbed" or - Heaven forfend, vain! - when one makes the effort to assemble an ensemble to shop or wears "nice things" simply to make one's way through the day. Silk pyjamas are good for colds, silk caftans are good for nasty colds, and beaded Persian slippers are great for aching feet!

    1. Beth, you are always such a sweetheart and I'd love to give you a hug but I will keep my snott-self away for now. Silk pyjamas-in my dreams! But for now cotton pyjamas and wooly socks are doing the trick. xoxo

  4. I have thrifted a few pairs of silk pyjamas. I put some elastic on the bottoms because I didn't want to hem them and I lounge around in harem pants after work. I'd be happy to keep an eye out for you if you'd like some, Shawna. :D

  5. I only have 'good clothes', by your definition: quality and fit. And I wear my cashmere sweaters every day (they cost a lot, I need to get my money's worth), and why not? Good quality lasts forever. If it doesn't last, it's not quality. Besides, I deserve to wear nothing but the best. I'm a terrible snob, and proud of it. But I'm a practical snob: in the long run it's more economical to buy (and wear) one quality item than cheap fast fashion. Special occasions? That's what big scarves and statement necklaces are for! And now I expect to see at least 3 outfit posts featuring your good black pants...

  7. Hooray for this! I've struggles with wearing my "good stuff" everyday - but as my life gets more relaxed I wonder - what am I saving the good stuff for? I wear my nice rings every day, and shoes that I love.

  8. You look lovely in your black pants Shawna. Your remedy of sunbeams is a great idea ... We are in the midst of summer here in South Africa so I am sure I could find some sunbeams to sit in and relax.

  10. I never save clothes for special occassions....often people say I'm overdressed and I always get asked how can I possibly walk in sky high heels all day but I do it for my own personal pleasure and I think that is always a good thing...so wear those gorgeous black pants as often as possible. They fit you great and they're comfy...so why not?

what is comfy is relative. I know many don't believe me but I honestly do feel comfortable in a shirt, pencil skirt and tights...I think it comes from my fligt attendant days. I just got used to spending all days in that kind of uniform...on another hand, I know women who wear make up where there is nobody around because they love it....but I've always been a bit lazy with make up. I only wear a lipstick most of the days....so it is all relative. Comfortable means different things for everyone.
